"Higher Ground"

Welcome.

Hi everybody.
Higher Ground”  15” x 20” oil on wrap around canvas. The title of this work of art came to me in a flash, similar as the one that inspired me to paint it. It was, “The Tender Kiss of an Infinite Moment”, that was my first thought about it. Truth is, that is what it felt like. Making the art is my way of celebrating that and perhaps, if I’m lucky, and I capture it, you feel it too!
When I encounter something as simple as a view from the dunes down to the sand and sea infused with the ethereal light here in Florida I am elevated to another level, instantly. Higher ground is where my intention is daily for myself and my art. Simplifying and changing the title is as much a salute to nature in her efficiency as the magnificence of her expression.

Study For Foster's Tern

Welcome. Hi everybody.

Until I lived at the beach and got to see these birds and their clan in action on a regular basis I didn't realize just how fast they are. Terns in flight are so angular and look like elegant sharp fighter jets streamlined and powerful.

I see more Common Terns and Royal Terns than any Foster's Terns. I love the markings and subtle color variations as well as some of the brighter reds in feet and bills as a counterpoint to all the grays.

I wanted to keep the studies nice and loose with washes and just a hint of temperature change in some of the hues with not more than three to four value changes.

Watercolor study of Ring Billed Gull

Welcome. Hi everybody.

I am such a great fan of shorebirds, gulls especially. I love their subtle tones, how they play against the backdrop of the sea on gray day or splashed with sunlight. Their community-flock behavior, content to be among their own.

Sometimes it is a simple thing that is the most beautiful. The subtle grays, just a slight counterpoint of yellow, a deliberate use of minimal detail make this a lovely watercolor that looks like it just fell of the brush. I like the variation of the outer edge, controlled but not straight edged.

All of these elements give this study a fresh feeling, like there is air in it and around it.

The Gate To The Secret Garden

Welcome.

Hi everybody.
There is something magical about the home and adjoining oceanfront cottage that support this ever- blooming lush garden. Showcasing that large starfish as a work of art on the gate inviting welcome with a few touches of branches (line work) is artistry in living. Creating your environment and shaping a collaboration with nature and nurturing it so that you are surrounded by beauty is an act of love. I walk by and it always elevates my awareness and joy. Gratitude.joy. Gratitude.

The Italian Job

Welcome.

Hi everybody. I pass this oceanfront home on almost every walk I take northward up the beach. I will get around to painting a portrait of it one day. I probably have taken 50 different days of shots of it with clouds, in the rain, sunny mornings and afternoons and sunsets over a timeline of 8 years. It speaks to me. I love the palette. I dig how it's sort of tucked in, that pot of geraniums on the upper terrace.

Now, I don't know that this place or the owners are Italian but perhaps it has just a touch of Tuscan flavor?
